Chief directorate of military counterintelligence “SMERSH” was established on April 19, 1943 under Military Commissariat of USSR. One of the goals of the directorate was counterintelligence activity against foreign and mainly German special services.

Behind the enemy’s lines intelligence and counterintelligence activities were held by the officers of 4th Department of the Chief directorate of military counterintelligence “SMERSH”. They had to withstand the hardest and most dangerous missions, for instance: espionage, sabotage, diversions, tracing down, kidnapping and elimination of various high-ranking enemy officers.
