Mount & Blade is an interesting stab at an RPG. The game features a good amount of depth in the form of a fairly complex stats/attributes system, quests and tournament battles. The graphics are decent - if retro. The horse animation is quite nice, as is the in-battle character animation. But the game's work-in-progress status rears its head early on, when you start traveling between towns: When entering a town, you're presented with a list of places you can visit - merchant, tavern, etc. - but there's no actual town to walk around in. And each building interior is exactly the same, save for torch placement. It's reminiscent of earlier Bethesda titles like Elder Scrolls: Arena, particularly in the repetitive NPC conversations and environment textures. It's nonetheless an impressive achievement considering Mount & Blade is the work of a two-person development team. All things considered, it's not perfect but it's definitely worth a look. |
