Everybody seems to love World of Warcraft. Well, anyone who's a MMORPG fan. And why not? We've waited a long time for the genre's "killer app" to appear, and so far, it looks like WoW is just that. It's not so much that it's innovative - essentially it's not. It's full of familiar stuff: quests, monsters, dungeons, loot, etc. Wow's not trying to reinvent the genre, instead, it streamlines the gaming experience, improving the good stuff and doing away with the annoyances. Gameplay is pretty fast-paced - there are plenty of quests wherever you look. The environments are by and large gorgeous, color-themed for each unique area so it's hard to get lost. There are noticeable improvements in design, too. When you die - and you will - you don't lose experience or equipment, you can resurrect yourself nearly intact. If you're busy and can only log on for an hour or so at time, you can sleep at an inn and you'll continue to accrue experience, which is a relief. WoW is chock full of little enhancements like these. The game's not without its faults, though. The quests can get repetitive - most are along the lines of "Go kill 20 creatures and bring me their hides". And the modeling is fairly simplistic, particularly the obviously blocky character models (a fair tradeoff for decent framerates). These complaints will matter little to MMORPG enthusiasts, for whom WoW is a virtual dream come true. |
